Q&A

How long have you been interested in the paranormal?

I have had an interest in the paranormal since I was a teenager, but we won’t mention how long ago that was. Anytime there was a show on television about the paranormal, my mother would have to get out the big pancake spatula to pry me off of the couch, chair, floor, or wherever I happened to plant myself, to get me to do something else.

What started this interest?

I’m not exactly sure what got me started. As long as I can remember, I just got a natural high every time someone told a real-life ghost story. In the past couple of years I had done some paranormal work on my own, and was able to get some very interesting EVP’s (Electronic Voice Phenomena.)

How did you become involved with New England Paranormal?

I attended Steve Gonsalves’ (the founder of NEP) Ghostbusters class at the Boston Center for Adult Education with my mother and stepfather, on the technical aspects behind becoming a paranormal investigator. Some members from The Atlantic Paranormal Society (TAPS) were there as well; that’s how I came to know Brian and Keith.

At the end of the class, I had expressed my interest in the paranormal to Steve and Brian, and told them about the amount of equipment that I purchased after selling some of my pilot gear. Steve asked me if I’d like to hang with the group after the class at the Hard Rock Café, but I had to regretfully decline the offer due to sleep issues.

A couple of days later, Steve and I were sending emails back and forth, and Steve asked if I’d like to go with the group on a case on Cape Cod. I wholeheartedly accepted, and was happy to have acquired an EVP from this case. Not long after, Steve asked if I’d go on a training session in Rhode Island, and again I was more than happy to go.

After the training session, we all went out to T.G.I. Fridays for some chow. Not only did I get to meet Jason Hawes (the founder of TAPS) who showed up at T.G.I.’s, but also Steve told me that I was now a member of New England Paranormal…YES!

When you go on an investigation what do you expect? What don't you expect?

Well, a lot of people say that they don’t expect to experience anything, but hope that they do. I’ve been spoiled by my luck at achieving EVP’s almost every time that I attempt getting one, so I think I’d be brokenhearted if the unseen decided to hang up the phone on me.

I don’t expect to get other types of evidence, since currently my weapons of choice are the magnetic and digital voice recorders. If I ever get real good at the other thousands of dollars of equipment I have, I’ll expect the otherworldly ones to show themselves on those instruments as well...hehe.

If someone wants to get involved with Paranormal Research/Investigations, what would you suggest to them?

First and foremost, go to the library and/or do extensive research online. You CANNOT have enough knowledge in this field. Also, get on the Internet, and find groups of similar interests to yours, and contact them. Go to any classes they may be offering, join a serious group like New England Paranormal or The Atlantic Paranormal Society, and DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK QUESTIONS! Most of all, don’t forget to have fun and enjoy what you’re doing...life is too short.

Any other comments?

I have only just begun with New England Paranormal, but I’m sure that there will be many days of fun ahead. If you are serious about the paranormal, which you probably are or you wouldn’t be reading this right now, go out there and get started.

I would like to leave you with two things that I can’t stress enough...

  1. GET PERMISSION - Without permission, you put all paranormal researcher’s reputations at risk.
  2. NEVER GO ALONE - Other than the obvious safety factor, your evidence holds very little water outside of friends and family, without witnesses.
Good Luck!
