Fayville Ghost

Fayville was a settlement in the larger township of Glastenbury, now almost totally depopulated. Glastenbury is the center of the infamous "Glastenbury Triangle", a place where many weird, tragic, and supernatural events have occurred. The weirdness has included, over the centuries, such things as sightings of the "Glastenbury Monster" who overturned a carriage one stormy night; disembodied voices heard in certain deserted spots; and strange, fast-moving lights seen on the side of the mountain. Fayville proper was the scene of a murder in 1892, involving two drunken sawmill employees, an argument, and a piece of firewood as the murder weapon.

The weirdness culminated in the late 1940's and early 1950's with a series of disappearances, at the rate of about one per year. Apparently, five (some say more) people vanished into thin air from the woods of Glastenbury. Only one body was ever recovered, that of the last victim -- and it was decomposed beyond forensic analysis. Theories abound as to the cause of these disappearances, from serial killers to mountain lions to more otherworldly things. Whatever the cause, many local people will not spend a night in Glastenbury alone.

HOW TO GET THERE: In downtown Bennington, find Park Street. Follow this north for approximately 9 miles; it becomes East Road after crossing the Shaftsbury town line. Watch for the Peter Matteson Tavern on your right (it has a sign). The next right is Glastenbury Road; take it and go 1.8 miles. Fayville Road will be on your left, marked with a sign indicating it's a "trail" and not maintained for vehicular travel, etc. Fayville is 1.5 miles up this road.
